Tim Walz grew up in Valentine, Nebraska, after being born in West Point, Nebraska. At just 17, he enlisted in the National Guard and spent 24 years in service, which profoundly shaped his life.

After earning a social science degree from Chadron State College in 1989, Walz taught in China. He then returned to the U.S. to serve full-time in the National Guard.

Tim started his teaching career at a school where he met his future wife, Gwen Whipple. They married and moved to Mankato, Minnesota, in 1996. There, Walz continued his education and professional development.

He earned a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Minnesota State University, Mankato, in 2001.

Walz transitioned into politics after a successful career in education and the military. He served as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District from 2007 to 2019.
